For a monoatomic ideal gas following the cyclic process ABCA shown in the U vs ρ plot, identify the incorrect option:

  1. Molar heat capacity of the process AB is R2
  2. Heat is rejected by the system in path BC
  3. Molar heat capacity for the process BC is 2R3
  4. Work done by the system in the process CA is 2U03ln4

Solution

The internal energy of a system is a function of temperature only, i.e., UT

Density is inversely proportional to volume, ρ1V

So, for process AB, slope is constant, therefore, U0ρ0=T1VTV= constant, using ideal gas equation, TV=PVnRVPV2= constsnt

Therefore, AB is a polytropic process, PVm=constant of polytropic index 2.

For a monoatomic gas, CV=32R

So, the molar heat capacity for a polytropic process is, C=CV+R1-m=3R2+R1-2C=R2

Now, In process BC the internal energy of the system is decreasing therefore, heat must be rejected by the system.

Now for molar heat capacity for process BC,

BC is an isochoric process, therefore, molar heat capacity in process BC is equal to molar heat capacity at constant volume, therefore, CBC=CV=32R

Now, for work done by the system in the process CA,

Since CA is an isothermal process, WCA=nRTlnVAVC

Internal energy U0=nCVT=n32RTnRT=23U0

VA1ρA1ρ0 and VC1ρC14ρ0

Putting the above results in work done formula,

WCA=23U0ln1ρ014ρ0=23U0ln4
