Following compounds are given A. $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{OH}$ B. $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{COCH}_3$ C. $\text {D. } \mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{OH}$ Which of the above compound(s), on being warmed with iodine solution and $\mathrm{NaOH}$, will give iodoform?
  1. A, C and D
  2. Only B
  3. A, B and C
  4. A and B

Solution

Compounds having either group or $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CHOH}-$ group, give iodoform when warmed with $\mathrm{I}_2$ and $\mathrm{NaOH}$. Thus, give iodoform when warmed with $\mathrm{I}_2$ and $\mathrm{NaOH}$. (Remember, NaOI oxidises $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CH}_2 \mathrm{OH}$ to $\mathrm{CH}_3 \mathrm{CHO}$, thus it gives positive iodoform test.)
