Find the mutual inductance in the arrangement, when a small circular loop of wire of radius R is placed inside a large square loop of wire of side L(LR). The loops are coplanar and their centres coincide :

  3. M=22μ0R2L
  4. M=2μ0RL2

Solution

The magnetic field due to the rectangular loop at its centre is:

B=4×μ0i4πL212+12=22μ0iπL

Therefore, the flux through the circular loop ϕ=πR2×B=22μ0R2iL

If M is the mutual inductance, then

Mdidt=dϕdt=22μ0R2Ldidt

M=22μ0R2L
