Dipole moment order of which of the following pairs of molecules is not correct?
Dipole moment order of which of the following pairs of molecules is not correct?
$\mathrm{HF}>\mathrm{HCl}$
$\mathrm{H}_2 \mathrm{~S}>\mathrm{CO}_2$
$\mathrm{NH}_3>\mathrm{NF}_3$
$\mathrm{CH}_4>\mathrm{CHCl}_3$
Solution
$\mathrm{CH}_4$ has a tetrahedral shape and is symmetrical so, its dipole moment is zero. But in $\mathrm{CHCl}_3$ presence of the one atom produce small dipole moment. Thus, dipole moment of chloroform is greater than methane.
