Difference between the corresponding roots of x 2 + a x + b = 0   &   x 2 + b x + a = 0 is…

Difference between the corresponding roots of x2+ax+b=0 & x2+bx+a=0 is same and ab, then
  1. a + b - 4 =0
  2. a - b - 4 = 0
  3. a - b + 4 = 0
  4. a + b + 4 = 0

Solution

Let α, β & γ, δ are the roots of the equations  x 2 + a x + b = 0  and x2+bx+a=0 respectively.

Therefore,

α+β=-a

αβ=b

Also, for the second equation

γ+δ=-b

 γδ = a

Given that,

α-β=γ-δ

α-β2=γ-δ2

α+β2-4αβ=γ+δ2-4γδ

a2-4b=b2-4a

a2-b2+4a-b=0

a-ba+b+4a-b=0

a-b4+a+b=0

a+b+4 = 0

ab
