Consider two Statements and a Question: Statement-1: The last day of the month is a Wednesday. Statement-2: The third Saturday of the month was the seventeenth day. Question: What day is the fourteenth of the given month? Which one of the following is correct in respect of the Statements and the Question?
  1. Statement-1 alone is sufficient to answer the Question
  2. Statement-2 alone is sufficient to answer the Question
  3. Both Statement-1 and Statement-2 are required to answer the Question
  4. Neither Statement-1 alone nor Statement-2 alone is sufficient to answer the Question

Solution

Statement 1: knowing only that the last day is Wednesday, without the number of days in the month, the 14th cannot be determined; not sufficient. Statement 2: the 17th is a Saturday, so the 10th is a Saturday and the 14th is a Wednesday; sufficient alone. Hence option (b).
