Consider the reaction C H 3 C H 2 C H 2 B r + N a C N → C H 3 C H 2 C H 2 C N + N a B r This reaction will…

Consider the reaction

CH3CH2CH2Br+NaCNCH3CH2CH2CN+NaBr

This reaction will be the fastest in
  1. Ethanol
  2. Methanol
  3. N, N' - dimethylformamde (DMF)
  4. Water

Solution

The reaction proceeds via SN2 mechanism. It is a unimolecular nucleophilic substitution reaction. The reaction is hence favoured in the presence of a polar aprotic solvent. DMF is a polar aprotic solvent. So, the reaction is the fastest with DMF solvent.
