Consider the combination of two capacitors C1 and C2, with C2>C1, when connected in parallel, the equivalent capacitance is 10 times the equivalent capacitance of the same connected in series. Calculate the ratio of capacitors, C2C1.

Solution

When connected in parallel

Ceq=C1+C2

When in series

Ceq'=C1C2C1+C2

C1+C2=10C1C2C1+C2

C1+C22=10C1C2

C12+C22-8C1C2=0

dividing by C12

C2C12-8C2C1+1=0

Let C2C1=x

x2-8x+1=0

x=8±64-42=4+15
