Consider a cuboid of sides 2x,4x and 5x and a closed hemisphere of radius r. If the sum of their surface areas is constant k, then the ratio x:r, for which the sum of their volumes is maximum, is
  1. 2:5
  2. 19:45
  3. 3:8
  4. 19:15

Solution

Let sum of surface area

 k=3πr2+76x2

  k is constant so dkdx=0

 6πrdrdx+2×76x=0

 drdx=-76x3πr     1

Now total volume V=23πr3+40x3

For maximum volume dVdx=0

2πr2drdx+120x2=0     2

 2πr2-76x3πr+120x2=0

 8x-19r3+15x=0

 xr=1945
