Consider a binary star system of star A and star B with masses mA and mB revolving in a circular orbit of radii rA and rB, respectively. If TA and TB are the time period of star A and star B, respectively, then:
  1. TATB=rArB32
  2. TA=TB
  3. TA>TB (if mA>mB)
  4. TA>TB (if rA>rB)

Solution

1) From the centre of mass, we get

M1R1=M2R2------1

2) Force acting on both starts i.e. gravitational force and centripetal force are balanced.

GM1M2R2=M1V12R1=M1V12R1------2

As we know, V1=2πR1T1&V2=2πR2T2

Substituting equation 3 in equation 2, we get

M1R1T12=M1R2T22------4

From equation 1, we conclude in eqution 4

T12=T22  or  T1=T2
