Circle(s) touching x -axis at a distance 3 from the origin and having an intercept of length 2 7 on y -axis…

Circle(s) touching x-axis at a distance 3 from the origin and having an intercept of length  2 7  on y-axis is (are)
  1. x2+y2-6x+8y+9=0
  2. x2+y2-6x+7y+9=0
  3. x2+y2-6x-8y+9=0
  4. x2+y2-6x-7y+9=0

Solution

Let  the circle be

x2 + y2 + 2gx + 2fy + c = 0

According to the question,

g2-c=0g2=c ....i

and

2f2-c=27f2-c=7.....ii

The circle passes through the point 3, 0, then
9+0+6g+0+c=0
9+6g+g2=0, by i
(g+3)2=0g=-3
 c = 9 and f2 = 16 f=±4

So the required circles are

 x2+y2-6x±8y+9=0.
