Solution

When toluene is treated with solution of chromyl chloride $\left(\mathrm{CrO}_{2} \mathrm{Cl}_{2}\right)$ in $\mathrm{CS}_{2}$, brown chrominum complex is obtained, which on acid hydrolysis gives benzaldehyde. This reaction is called Etard reaction.
