Change in temperature of the medium changes [NCERT Exemplar]

Change in temperature of the medium changes [NCERT Exemplar]
  1. frequency of sound waves
  2. amplitude of sound waves
  3. wavelength of sound waves
  4. loudness of sound waves

Solution

Speed of sound wave in a medium, $v \propto \sqrt{T}$ (where, $T$ is temperature of the medium) Clearly, when temperature changes, speed also changes. Now, $v = \nu \lambda$ where, $\nu$ is frequency and $\lambda$ is wavelength. $\because$ Frequency ($\nu$) remains fixed, $\therefore v \propto \lambda$ or $\lambda \propto v \Rightarrow \lambda \propto \sqrt{T}$ Hence, with change in temperature of the medium, wavelength ($\lambda$) of sound waves changes.
