Totipotency is the process by which a single cell can develop such that all the differentiated cells of the plant. It plays an important role in tissue culture as a single can be cultured to form the complete organism.

Not all plant cells are totipotent, but under appropriate conditions certain cells may become totipotent. They maintain totipotency and developmental plasticity in the differentiated state. They have the ability to dedifferentiate, proliferate, and subsequently regenerate into mature plants under appropriate culture conditions.
