Calculate the pH of buffer solution containing 0:027M weak acid and 0.054 M of its salt with strong base if $\mathrm{pK}_{\mathrm{a}}$ is 4.2 .
- 4.5
- 3.2
- 5.6
- 6.4
Solution
For an acidic buffer solution,
$\begin{aligned}
\mathrm{pH} & =\mathrm{pK}_{\mathrm{a}}+\log _{10} \frac{[\text { Salt }]}{[\text { Acid }]} \\
& =4.2+\log _{10} \frac{0.054}{0.027}=4.2+\log _{10} 2 \\
\therefore \quad \mathrm{pH} & =4.2+0.3010=4.50
\end{aligned}$
