Benzaldehyde on heating with \(\mathrm{NaOH}\) gives benzyl alcohol and sodium benzoate. This reaction is known as Cannizzaro reaction where those aldehydes which do not have an \(\alpha\)-hydrogen atom undergoes self oxidation and reduction.
