At constant temperature, the pressure of gas is decreased by $20 \%$. The percentage change in volume
  1. increase by $29 \%$
  2. decreases by $25 \%$
  3. increases by $25 \%$
  4. decreases by $20 \%$

Solution

Ideal gas equation states that: $P V=n R T$ As temperature remains constant, so $P V=$ constant As pressure decreases by $20 \%$, so $P_2=0.8 P$ $\begin{aligned} & \Rightarrow P V=(0.8 P) V_2 \\ & \Rightarrow V_2=\frac{P V}{0.8 P}=\frac{V}{0.8}=1.25 \mathrm{~V}\end{aligned}$ So, volume of gas increase by $25 \%$
