Assuming the earth to be a sphere of uniform mass density, the weight of a body at a depth d=R2 from the surface of earth, if its weight on the surface of earth is 200 N, will be : (Given R= radius of earth)
  1. 300 N
  2. 100 N
  3. 400 N
  4. 500 N

Solution

The acceleration due to gravity with depth is

g'=g1-dR

The given data is

W=200 Nd=R2

Let the weight be at the given depth, W'. Hence, the value is

mg'=mg1-R2R=mg2

The Weight W' =W2=2002=100 N
