Assertion (A): HCl gas is dried by passing through concentrated H2SO4.

Reason (R): HCl gas reacts with NH3 that gives white fumes

  1. Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is the correct explanation of (A)
  2. Both (A) and (R) are correct and (R) is not the correct explanation of (A)
  3. (A) Is correct but (R) is incorrect
  4. (A) Is incorrect but (R) is correct

Solution

In laboratory, HCl is prepared by heating sodium chloride with concentrated sulphuric acid.

NaCl + H2SO4420K  NaHSO4+HCl NaHSO4 + NaCl 823K  Na2SO4+HCl

HCl gas can be dried by passing through concentrated sulphuric acid as concentrated sulphuric acid being hygroscopic in nature as it  absorbs moisture from the air and gets diluted and acts as a drying agent. It has a strong affinity for water and thus it absorbs water quickly.

HCl reacts with NH3 and gives white fumes of NH4Cl.

NH3+HClNH4Cl

Assertion and reason are correct but the given reason is not the correct explanation of the assertion.
