An ideal gas expands against a constant external pressure of $2.0$ atmosphere from 20 litre to 40 litre and absorbs $10 \mathrm{~kJ}$ of heat from surrounding. What is the change in internal energy of the system? (given : 1 atm-litre $=101.3 \mathrm{~J}$ )
  1. $4052 \mathrm{~J}$
  2. $5948 \mathrm{~J}$
  3. $14052 \mathrm{~J}$
  4. $9940 \mathrm{~J}$

Solution

$\Delta \mathrm{U}=\mathrm{q}+\mathrm{w}$
$=10 \times 1000-2 \times(20) \times 101.3=5948 \mathrm{~J}$
