An electric lamp connected in series with a capacitor and an a.c. source is glowing with certain brightness. On increasing the value of capacitance the brightness of the lamp
  1. is increased.
  2. is decreased.

Solution

The capacitive reactance is given by $\mathrm{X}_{\mathrm{C}}=\frac{1}{2 \pi \mathrm{fC}}$ If capacitance $(\mathrm{C})$ is increased $\mathrm{X}_{\mathrm{C}}$ will decrease. The total impedance of the circuit will decrease and hence current and brightness will increase.
