An electric dipole is placed at a distance of 2 cm from an infinite plane sheet having positive charge density $\sigma_{\mathrm{o}}$. Choose the correct option from the following.
  1. Potential energy and torque both are maximum.
  2. Torque on dipole is zero and net force is directed away from the sheet.
  3. Torque on dipole is zero and net force acts towards the sheet.
  4. Potential energy of dipole is minimum and torque is zero.

Solution

Electric field due to sheet $E=\frac{\sigma}{2 \varepsilon_0}$
and torque on dipole $\dot{\tau}=\dot{P} \times \dot{E}$
here $\vec{\tau}=0$
and $U=-\vec{P} \cdot \vec{E} \rightarrow$ should be minimum
