Among the following halogens \(\mathrm{F}_2, \mathrm{Cl}_2, \mathrm{Br}_2\) and \(\mathrm{I}_2\) Which can undergo disproportionation reactions?
  1. \(\mathrm{F}_2, \mathrm{Cl}_2\) and \(\mathrm{Br}_2\)
  2. \(\mathrm{F}_2\) and \(\mathrm{Cl}_2\)
  3. Only \(\mathrm{I}_2\)
  4. \(\mathrm{Cl}_2, \mathrm{Br}_2\) and \(\mathrm{I}_2\)

Solution

$\mathrm{F}_2$ do not disproportionate because fluorine do not exist in positive oxidation state however $\mathrm{Cl}_2, \mathrm{Br}_2 \& \mathrm{I}_2$ undergoes disproportionation.
