Acid rain is caused by chemical reaction that begins when compounds like sulphur dioxide \(\left(\mathrm{SO}_2\right)\) and nitrogen dioxide \(\left(\mathrm{NO}_2\right)\) are released into the air. There substances can rise very high into the atmosphere, where they mix and react with water, oxygen and other chemicals to form more acidic pollutants, known as acid rain.
