A wire of length 20 m is to be cut into two pieces. A piece of length 1 is bent to make a square of area A1 and the other piece of length 2 is made into a circle of area A2. If 2 A1+3 A2 is minimum then π1:2 is equal to:
  1. 6: 1
  2. 3: 1
  3. 1: 6
  4. 4: 1

Solution

The length of wire is 20 m.

According to the question:

1+2=20

d2 d1=-1

Let the side of the square be x, then

4x=1

x=14   ...1

Let the radius of the circle be y, then

 2πy=2

y=22π   ...2

Hence,

A1=142 and A2=π22π2

Let S=2A1+3A2

S=(1)28+3(2)24π

dSd1=218+624π·d2 d1

For S to be minimum,

dsd1=0

218+624π·d2 d1=0

218-624π=0   d2 d1=-1

14=624π

π12=6
