A Van de Graff generator has a spherical metal shell as an electrode which is at a potential 15×106 V. If the dielectric strength of the surrounding medium is 5×107Vm-1 then the diameter of the shell is

Given,

Potential, V=15×106 Vand dielectric strength, E=5×107 V m-1

so the radius of the cell is,

r=VE=15×1065×107 =30 cm, hence the diameter will be,
