A uniform solid cylinder with radius R and length L has moment of inertia I1, about the axis of cylinder. A concentric solid cylinder of radius R'=R2  and length L'=L2 is carved out of the original cylinder. If I2 is the moment of inertia of the carved out portion of the cylinder then I1I2=  __________.

(Both I1 and I2 are about the axis of the cylinder)   

Solution

Moment of inertia of solid cylinder of radius R and length L about the axis is I1=M1R22.

Moment of inertia of carved out portion of the cylinder of radius R2 and length L2 is I2=M2R222=M2R28

Now, the ratio I1I2=4M1M2

As, mass=density×volume

So, I1I2=4×ρπR2LρπR2L4×2=32
