A tank has two inlet pipes that fill it in $15$ min and $20$ min. They are opened together; how much of the tank is filled in $5$ minutes?
- $\dfrac{5}{12}$
- $\dfrac{7}{12}$
- $\dfrac{1}{2}$
- $\dfrac{2}{3}$
Solution
Combined rate $= \dfrac{1}{15} + \dfrac{1}{20} = \dfrac{4 + 3}{60} = \dfrac{7}{60}$/min. In $5$ min $= \dfrac{35}{60} = \dfrac{7}{12}$.
