A stick of length r units slides with its ends on coordinate axes. Then the locus of the midpoint of the stick is a curve whose length is

Solution

Let the stick intercepts x-axis at point a,0 and y-axis at point 0,b and α,β are midpoints of the stick. then,

a+02=αa=2α

b+02=βb=2β

Now given length of stick is r units,

Then, r2=a-02+0-b2

r2=a2+b2

r2=2α2+2β2

r2=4α2+4β2

α2+β2=r22

If we replace α,β by x,y then, our equation becomes,

x2+y2=r22

So, locus will be a circle with center at origin and radius r2,

Hence length is given by 2π×r2=πr.
