Photorespiration is a light dependent process which occurs in $\mathrm{C}_3$ plants. It is opposite to photosynthesis because during this process, uptake of $\mathrm{O}_2$ and release of $\mathrm{CO}_2$ take place. Due to presence of Kranz anatomy, $C_4$ plants do not show photorespiration.
