A plant in your garden avoids photorespiratory losses, has improved water use efficiency, shows high rates of photosynthesis at high temperatures and has improved efficiency of nitrogen utilization. In which of the following physiological groups would you assign this plant?
  1. C3
  2. C4
  3. CAM
  4. Nitrogen fixer

Solution

C4 plants have a high rate of photosynthesis at a higher temperature. These plants efficiently uses PEPCo enzyme to assimilate the atmospheric carbon dioxide and convert it into a four-carbon compound.

In C4 plants, RuBisCO capacity limits net CO2 assimilation rate below 20°C in chilling‐tolerant species, but the control over net CO2 assimilation rate at elevated temperature remains high. Therefore, the ability of C4 plants acclimatization remains high.
