A metal wire is of length $l$ has magnetic moment $M$. What is the new magnetic moment if it is bent in L-shape?

Solution

Magnetic wire of length $l$ has magnetic moment $M$, therefore $M=m l$ where, $\mathrm{m}$ is the strength of each monopole. If it is bent into $l$ shape the effective separation between the monopoles changes to $\frac{l}{\sqrt{2}}$. Therefore, new magnetic moment is: $M^{\prime}=m\left(\frac{l}{\sqrt{2}}\right)=\frac{M}{\sqrt{2}}$
