A heat engine absorbs heat Q1 at temperature T2 and heat Q2 at temperature T2. Work done by the engine is (Q1+Q2). This data:

Solution

According to the first law of thermodynamics:

 U=Q+W------1

Change in internal energy U=0, for heat engines, because initial and final states are same. Internal energy is a state function.

From equation (1),

0=Q+W

W=-Q

Total work done=-Total heat exchanged

Total work done=-(Q1+Q2)

Work done by heat engine is Q1+Q2
