A glass slab of thickness 4.8 cm is placed on the piece of paper on which an ink dot is marked. By how much distance would an ink dot appear to be raised? $($ The refractive index of glass $=1.5)$
  1. 1.6 cm
  2. 2.4 cm
  3. 3.2 cm
  4. 4.8 cm

Solution

$\begin{array}{ll} & \mathrm{n}=\frac{\text { Real depth }}{\text { Apparent depth }} \\ 1.5=\frac{4.8}{\mathrm{~d}^{\prime}} \\ \therefore \quad & \mathrm{d}^{\prime}=3.2 \mathrm{~cm}\end{array}$
$\therefore \quad \mathrm{h}=\mathrm{d}-\mathrm{d}^{\prime}=4.8-3.2=1.6 \mathrm{~cm}$
