A gaseous mixture of two substances A and B, under a total pressure of 0.8 atm is in equilibrium with an ideal liquid solution. The mole fraction of substance A is 0.5 in the vapour phase and 0.2 in the liquid phase. The vapour pressure of pure liquid A is____atm.(Nearest integer)

Solution

Raoult’s law states that a solvent’s partial vapour pressure in a solution (or mixture) is equal or identical to the vapour pressure of the pure solvent multiplied by its mole fraction in the solution.

Raoult’s law is valid only in the case of ideal solutions

PA=PoAχAAccording to Raoult's law

PA=PTYAAccording to Dalton's lawPT=Total pressurePA=vapour pressure of A in solution

PoA=Vapour pressure of pure liquid A

χA=Mole fraction of component A in liquid phase

YA=Mole fraction of component A in gaseous phase

So, PA=PoAχA=YAPT

PAo0.2=0.5×0.8

PAo=2 atm
