A fair n n>1 faces die is rolled repeatedly until a number less than n appears. If the mean of the number of tosses required is n9, then n is equal to

Solution

Given,

A fair n n>1 faces die is rolled repeatedly until a number less than n appears,

xi      1                2                         3                      4                       ...pi   n-1n     1n·n-1n      1n2·n-1n      1n3·n-1n     ...

Now we know that, mean is given by,

Mean =i=1pixi=1·n-1n+2n·n-1n+3n2 n-1n+...

n9=1-1nS ........1

Where, S=1+2n+3n2+4n3+...  ......2

1nS=1n+2n2+3n3+...  ......3

Now subtracting equation 2-3 we get,

1-1nS=1+1n+1n2+1n3+...

1-1nS=11-1n

Now putting the value of S in equation 1 we get,

n9=1-1n×11-1n2=nn-1

n=10
