A direct current of 4 A and an alternating current of peak value 4 A flow through resistance of 3 Ω and 2 Ω respectively. The ratio of heat produced in the two resistances in same interval of time will be :
  1. 3:2
  2. 3:1
  3. 3:4
  4. 4:3

Solution

Heat produced in resistor when direct current flows is H1=i2R1t

H1=423t=163t

Heat produced in resistor when alternating current flows is  H2=irms2R2t                irms=i02

H2=i022R2t

H2=422×2t=16t

Thus, the ratio is H1:H2=3:1
