A copper wire is stretched to make it 0.5% longer. The percentage change in its electrical resistance if its volume remains unchanged is:
  1. 2.5%
  2. 1.0%
  3. 2.0%
  4. 0.5%

Solution

Volume, V=A.l

In differential form,
dVV=dAA+dll0=dAA+dll

dAA=-dll

Also resistance of wire is as follows R=ρlA
diffrentiation formula for resistance is as follows

 dRR=dll-dAAdRR=dll-(-dll)
dRR=2·dll

dRR×100=2·dll×100dRR%=2×0.5%dRR%=1%

% change in R=2×0.5%=1%
