A compound 'A' on reaction with 'X' and 'Y produces the same major product but different by product 'a' and 'b'. Oxidation of 'a' gives a substance produced by ants.

  2. KMnO4,(dilute), 273 K and KMnO4/H+
  3. KMnO4/H+ and O3,H2O/Zn
  4. O3,H2O/Zn and KMnO4/H+

Solution

The substance produce by ants is formic acid, which is the product of oxidation of "a", means 'a' should be formaldehyde. Now, formaldehyde and ketons are prepared by reductive ozonolysis of alkenes. And by oxidation in presence of strong oxidising agents alkenes give ketons and acids.
