A circular platform is mounted on a vertical frictionless axle. Its radius is r=2 m and its moment of inertia I=200 kg m2. It is initially at rest. A 70 kg man stands on the edge of the platform and begins to walk along the edge at speed v0=1.0 m s-1, relative to the ground. The angular velocity of the platform is 0.7 rad s-1. When the man has walked once around the platform so that he is at his original position on it, his angular displacement relative to the ground is
  1. 65π
  2. 56π
  3. 45π
  4. 54π

Solution

Angular velocity of the man relative to the platform is

ωr=ω+v0r=0.7+12=1.2 rad s-1

Time taken by the man to complete one revolution is

T=2πωr=2π1.2 s

Angular displacement of the man w.r.t. ground is

θ=ω0T=v0Tr=12 2π1.2=56π rad .
