A carrier wave is used to transmit a message signal. If the peak voltage of modulating signal and carrier signal are increased by 1% and 3% respectively, the modulation index is changed by
  1. -2%
  2. 4%
  3. 2%
  4. -4%

Solution

Modulation index, m=Peak value of modulating signalEmPeak value of carrier signalEc

When modulating signal is increased by 1%, then, Em'=1+0.01Em=1.01Em

And when carrier signal in increased by 3%, then, Ec'=1+0.03Ec=1.03Ec

Now, the new modulation index is m'=1.01Em1.03Ec=0.98m

Thus, the modulation index changes by -2%.
