A body of mass is taken from earth surface to the height h equal to twice the radius of earth (Re), the increase in potential energy will be : (g = acceleration due to gravity on the surface of earth)
  1. 3mgRe
  2. 13mgRe
  3. 23mgRe
  4. 12mgRe

Solution

The potential energy of a particle at a distance r (>Re)  from the centre of Earth is,

U=-GMemr

Initially, the particle is at a height Re from the surface. Therefore, r=Re.

Ui=-GMemRe

When height is increased to 2Re from surface, r=2Re+Re=3Re

Uf=-GMem3Re

Thus, the change in potential energy is

U=Uf-Ui=-GMem3Re+GMemRe=23GMemRe=23GMeRe2mRe=23mgRe as g=GMeRe2
