A body cools in 7 minutes from 60oC to 40oC. The temperature of the surrounding is 10oC. The temperature of the body after the next 7 minutes will be

  1. 30oC
  2. 32oC
  3. 34oC
  4. 28oC

Solution

Newton's law of cooling states that

T1-T2t=KT1+T22-T0   ...(i)

where T0 is the temperature of the surrounding. From equation (i),

60-407×60=K60+402-10

207×60=40KK=207×60×40

Let the temperature of the body after the given time be x °C. By Newton's law of cooling,

40-x7×60=K40+x2-1040-x7×60=114×60(20+x2)160-4x=20+xx=28 °C
