A block of mass 48 kg kept on a smooth horizontal surface is pulled by a rope of length 4 m by a horizontal force of 25 N applied to the other end. If the linear density of the rope is 0.5 kg m-1, the force acting on the block is
  1. 24 N
  2. 25 N
  3. 12 N
  4. 13 N

Solution

Given,
Mass of block M=48 kg

Linear density of string λ=0.5 kg m-1

Length of string l=4 m

Force applied F=25 N

Total mass of the system m=M+λl=50 N

Net acceleration of system asys=Fm=2550=0.5 m s-1

Suppose Tension at a point connecting end of string with block is T.

From the F.B.D. of block-

  T=Masys=48×0.5

  T=24 N

Hence, force acting on the block is 24 N.
