a + b means a - b; a - b means a x b; a x b means a ÷ b; a ÷ b; means a + b, then what is the value of 10 + 30 - 100 x 50 ÷ 25? (Operations are to be replaced simultaneously)
  1. 15
  2. 0
  3. −15
  4. −25

Solution

Replacing the symbols: + becomes -, - becomes x, x becomes ÷, ÷ becomes +. So $10 + 30 - 100 \times 50 \div 25$ becomes $10 - 30 \times 100 \div 50 + 25$. Applying BODMAS: $= 10 - 30 \times 2 + 25 = 10 - 60 + 25 = -25$.
