A ( 2 , 3 , 4 ) ,   B ( 4 , 5 , 7 ) ,   C ( 2 , - 6 , 3 ) ,   D ( 4 , - 4 ,   k ) are…

A(2,3,4), B(4,5,7), C(2,-6,3), D(4,-4, k) are four points. If the line AB¯ is parallel to CD¯ then k is equal to
  1. 2
  2. 4
  3. 5
  4. 6

Solution

AB=4-2i^+5-3j^+7-4k^=2i^+2j^+3k^

Direction ratios 2,2,3

CD=2i^+2j^+(k-3)k^

Direction ratios 2,2,k-3

For AB to be parallel to CD, the modulus of their direction cosines should be equal.

Direction cosines of AB will be 217,217,317

And of CD will be 28+k-32,28+k-32,k-38+k-32

So,

217=28+k-32

17=8+k-32

9=k2+9-6k

kk-6=0

k=6
