5 L of an alkane requires 25 L of oxygen for its complete combustion. If all volumes are measured at constant temperature and pressure, the alkane is
  1. Isobutane
  2. Ethane
  3. Butane
  4. Propane

Solution

Combustion of Hydrocarbon,

CxHy+x+y4O2x CO2+y2H2O

 nv (P,T=Constant)

for 1 mole of CxHy=x+y4O2 required

for 5 L of CxHy=x+y4 5 L, O2 required

ratio of alkane and O2 is 5/25

So, x+y45=25

    x+y4=5,

which is satisfied by C3H8.
